Sardar Vallabhai Patel was born on 31st October 1875 in Gujarat.
Patel had his schooling in places called Nadiad, Borsad and Petlad.
He completed his schooling very late at the age of 22. So, many people considered him as an irresponsible youth.
Realising the thoughts of others about him, he crafted a plan for himself. He decided to study law.
He spent many years away from his home to study and earn money. By this way, he became an ardent and successful lawyer.
Patel got married to a lady called Jhaverba and got a house in Godhra municipality.
Patel’s wife got affected by cancer and lost her life in the year 1909. He received the news of his wife’s death in the midst of a case argument. But, he kept the news aside and completed the case.
Patel’s friends initiated him to compete in an election. As a result he won the post of Sanitation commissioner in the year 1917 at Ahmedabad.
Patel gave his full support to Gandhi’s Non- cooperation movement. He appointed more than 3 lakh members for the movement.
Patel had worked against Untouchability, Alcoholism, and caste discrimination.
The Somnath temple was ordered to be reconstructed by Patel.
Universities like Punjab University, Osmania University,Banaras Hindu University, University of Allahabad and Nagpur University awarded him with Honorary doctorates.
The Time Magazine featured him in the cover page in January 1947.
Patel died due to a major heart attack on 15th December 1950.
The Dam near Navagam across the river Narmada got named as Sardar Sarovar dam.
A Trust by name Sardar Patel Memorial trust got formed and it dedicates to work on publishing magazines and books about him.
Shri Bhaikaka formed an education institution which was later named as SardarPatel University.
Likewise many educational institutions got the name of Sardar Vallabhai patel, after his demise.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared 31st October as “National Unity day” on behalf of Sardar Vallabhai Patel.
He was popularly known as “The Iron man of India”
There are many stories to prove that why he deserved such a title. He proved the strength of his mind in many situations in his life.
Nizam Osman Ali Khan was a Muslim and he ruled Hyderabad in the year 1948. He claimed Hyderabad to be a separate nation or else it should be merged with Pakistan.
But, Patel as in the capacity of Acting Prime Minister, he ordered the military forces to invade Hyderabad. He succeeded in defeating the forces of the Nizam. That action was called as Operation Polo, in which thousands of people got dead. However, Patel was able to secure Hyderabad back into full control.

In 1931, Patel won the post of congress president.Patel got into prison in the year 1940 for tenure of 9 months. He was the Minister of Home affairs during the period 1947 to 1950.
He also played the role of Supreme commander in chief of Indian army (1947 to 1950). He worked for the Political party “Indian National Congress”. He was awarded with a Bharat Ratna in the year 1991 posthumously. He initially hated Mahatma Gandhi, but later he associated with him for a long term.
He had two children by names Maniben Patel and Dahyabhai patel.
